In the News: Dr. Joseph Varon saves his own life with help from the Cryohelmet
May 17, 2017
I ordered a Cryohelmet for my 28 year old son who suffered a traumatic brain injury in July 2011 following a high speed auto crash where he was the belted front seat passenger. He had multiple skull fractures and was in a coma for 10 days. His neurologist did not give us much hope but he did come out of the coma and on follow-up had a plate surgically placed over his left temporal lobe where his skull was crushed. He suffers daily from severe headaches. He awakes with a headache and goes to bed with a headache. The Cryohelmet has been great. My only regret is I wish I could get another one for him because he uses it most of the day because it takes the edge off his pain. Thank you for inventing this.

Former NFL player Bob Kratch sent us this feedback through our Facebook page:
I want to thank this company for its research. I spent 21 years of my life playing football. 8 years in the NFL. My teamate Leonard Marshal introduced me to this product. I use it, love it, and wish I had this playing football. It saddens me to have lost teamates from the complications of CTE. I loved the game but more importantly it breaks my heart to loose friends that I played with. I encourage anyone who knows football players to share this product with them and their teams. At any level. Thank you for your research. Playing ball for so long in a era where smelling salts was the treatment for a concussion concerns me. Thank you and spread these gifts that are protecting these fine young men.

My son is a catcher, and while catching during a fall baseball game, he suffered a concussion when a batter foul tipped a ball which hit him just above the left eye on his catchers mask. The ball actually hit him hard enough to dent the cage of his mask.
I contacted All Star to see what we needed to do. They actually sent all new hardware, including a new cage for his helmet, but while we were going back and forth in emails, Brad mentioned about a new product they developed called the CryoHelmet. After doing my own research on the device and watching several videos online, I decided to purchase the CryoHelmet for my son, and let me tell you, it drastically reduced his recovery time. He suffered his concussion on Saturday, September 5th 2015, and we received the CryoHelmet in the mail on the following Thursday. He used it for 45 minutes 3-4 times a day for the next 6 days. During the first week of school before he had the CryoHelmet, his headaches were ranging 5-7 on a 1-10 scale while he was at school, and 3-4 when he was at home. After using the CryoHelmet for one day, his pain level decreased to a 1-2, and remained there all weekend. He returned to school the following Monday for about 3 hours, and his pain level rose to a 4, on Tuesday it rose to a 3, and Wednesday, when he went for 5 hours, it only went up to a 2. On Thursday, he finally woke up with no headache for the first time since the incident, and again went to school for about 5 hours. It only went to a 1 that day, and that wasn't until his last class of the day. He was cleared to return to normal activity on September 25th, just 20 days after the initial concussion, and his headaches have fully subsided. Thank you so much to Brad and Rich from All Star for their caring customer support. This product will be going with us to every baseball practice and game from this point forward. I've already told several other people about it who have also suffered concussions.

Read about Brittni Souder and her battle with PCS here.
Now read about Brittni's experience with the Cryohelmet:
Yes I absolutely love my CryoHelmet. I use it every single day and it helps me fall asleep every night. I love that the ice is pressing into my head - the pressure of extreme cold can help melt an extreme headache into a tolerable one within minutes. I also love that it stays on while allowing me to do other things. My only critique is that for me, personally, I would like there to be ice at the base of the head and neck as well. A lot of my post-concussive symptoms seem to stem from my neck in addition to my head so I would love to have ice extended down into that area. I bought a flimsy ice pack online that surrounds the neck and head before I got the CryoHelmet. I like that the other Icepack ices the back of my head and neck more but other than that it can't even compare. Depending on how hot my head is when I put on the CryoHelmet it can stay cold for anywhere from 40 minutes to 3 hours - potentially longer, I usually fall asleep with it on. The amount of time the CryoHelmet is in the freezer makes a big difference. It will be cold and nice to wear if you're just hot and want to cool down after just an hour in the freezer. However, to get the maximum cold and length of use out of it I would recommend at least 3 hours in the freezer. CryoHelmet is the best thing I've found for effectively icing my head. It's provided me with some pain relief even with my worst headaches. At this point, it's hard to find anything that provides any relief so I really appreciate you reaching out to me. It's made a big difference.

I started using a Cryohelmet after I became very limited on options for treating my chronic migraines and cluster headaches. With all of the dangerous side effects most prescribed medicines seemed to have on me I opted for a safer way to alleviate the pain. Just in the first 10 minutes the pain resulting from a level 9 migraine dropped down to a 6. Thirty minutes later I was almost pain free, but the best part was that I didn't have to be stuck in bed. My problematic symptoms (dizziness, sensitivity to sound, nausea) all went away. Whenever I use my Cryohelmet during a cluster headache I'm much more relaxed and at ease due to the Cryomax cold packs covering all affected areas of my head. I would highly recommend this product to any one plagued with a neurological condition because it's the safest and most effective way to treat pain and troubling symptoms that usually accompany them.

Courtney Sprissler is another amazing individual living with PCS and choosing to share her experiences with others to raise awareness for concussions and proper recovery. Courtney sustained numerous concussions during her field hockey career and now recognizes that she did recover fully from many of them before returning to action which contributed to her current condition. We connected with Courtney so she could try the Cryohelmet to help manage her symptoms and here is her feedback:
I do like the Cryohelmet. I wear it when I am about to go to bed and it allows me to calm down more than I was before and give me the relief I need to tempt sleeping. I do love how long it stays cold for. I like how the front covers a lot because it allows for the pain behind the eye to get attention. Thank you so much in helping me out.

I try to use it once daily now versus multiple times a day like I was. I am still in recovery from post concussive but it definitely has made my symptoms improve by far! I was about to go back to small pain killers and that but I haven't even thought about those or migraine relief. I would probably be very far behind in recovery or be trying to ace wrap ice packs to my head still.

I absolutely love the cryohelmet. It helps after hard training sessions with cooling my body temperature back down. I have also found that I do not get exertion headaches after training when I used to after I would either have a really hard sparring session or any kind of intense training. I've been getting asked a lot of questions about it from others in the gyms I train in. :)

In July I got your helmet as a gift from a friend. I didn't need it the first few weeks then I did. I look like a fool wearing it but OMG if that wasn't the best thing ever! I didn't want to take it off. I think I wore it for 2 hours that first time. I have long hair so I did not put anything to shield my skin. It was comfy and just the right amount of cool. It made my full blown migraine go away. In all the years I've had migraines I've never been told or thought about using ice. Sometimes I'll put an icepack on my neck but if you've never experienced a migraine before.. what feels good is weight... I have a heavy temperpedic pillow and I only use it to put on top of my head when I lay down to sleep. The weight feels great. With your helmet that's what I love.. It's cool and heavy and the ice goes to the back of the head and all around the neck.
I recently strained my neck and have been in pain for 3 weeks now and while it is healing I've also had many headaches/migraines specially when I wake up. So I pop on my Cryohelmet while I'm getting ready in the morning and it helps my neck and it helps fend off the headache. Even yesterday, I worked out with my trainer for the first time since hurting my neck and even though we did all exercises that didn't involve my neck and shoulders I came home from the gym with a slight headache and my neck started to throb.. It turned into a migraine. I put on the helmet and went and took a nap and woke up feeling much better. It wasn't completely gone but I was able to function and I didn't need to take any meds. I LOVE IT!
I've been using the Cryohelmet for almost three months now and it's amazing! Its reduced my usage of heavy medication to treat my migraines, and in under an hour my migraines are heavily diminished or gone.
I actually just recommended the Cryohelmet to a fellow co-worker this week.

I like the easy application. There are a few other products on the market with a similar goal. Anything that will decrease blood flow to the hypersensitive scalp will be appreciated by the migraineur. It also gives the patient a sense of empowerment as they are taking action to rid their headache. I like your product. I will include it in my handouts. I am all about throwing a multi-prong attack at a migraine.

I have been using the Cryo Helmet now for about two weeks and I want you to know it has been a Big Relief to me.
As you know I suffer from Migraines and my usual holding ice packs on my head and neck area has not been very productive for me.
Having a migraine along with nausea and dizziness trying to hold the ice packs on my head and neck did not get done for long.
Since I have been using the Cryo Helmet for my severe migraines it has been a welcome relief.
After taking my medication and using the Cryo Helmet within an hours’ time my severe migraine subsides and the nausea and dizziness goes away.
Normally with the migraines it is hours before I get any relief and with the intensity of the migraine I cannot even keep my eyes open because of light sensitivity.
I wanted you to know how it has helped me these last two weeks and will be telling my primary care doctor about the Cryo Helmet and how it has helped me.
Thank you for all your help. I sincerely appreciate it.

I woke up Saturday morning with the onset of a migraine, My migraines are usually headaches accompanied with rippling vision in my eyes, I am totally out of commission. Can’t focus my sight and head in lots of pain. When a migraine hits the pain is sever, sleep is not an option for me throughout this experiences. I can’t focus on anything else but the pain, taking medication takes about a good hour to start relieving my pain and another ½ hour before I get complete vision back. This is normally for me the onset of a three day process, once I get one it comes and goes for about three days, I have to stay on medication and as soon as I feel it coming on I have to shut myself in a dark noiseless room. I get sick to my stomach, so our weekend is normally ruined. I can’t do anything.
I want to thank you so much for the helmet: I had put some of the strips for the helmet in the freezer and some of them in the refrigerator, ( I recalled you said that it might be hard on the head to lay down if they were all frozen). As soon as I felt the migraine coming on I ran to get the helmet, put all the strips in and put it on. I laid down as I usually do to help relax and hopefully ease the pain. I immediately felt the coolness from the helmet which help me focus on all the areas of my head that were feeling the cool sensation. It was the coolness from the helmet that helped me focus from pain to the now cool feeling surrounding my head that help me relax and for the first time ever: I fell asleep!!! In about 15 minutes into what is usually a nightmare for me for the next three days. I have never fallen asleep before! when I woke up It was gone, I almost felt refreshed. But the most remarkable part of this all is that it was done!!!!!! I didn’t have any small relapses during the next couple of days like I normally would have.
I wouldn’t give this up for anything. It saved me from so much pain, saved my weekend and Chris’s. we were able to enjoy friends and the beautiful weather this weekend. I can’t say enough about how happy I am that you thought to get this for me.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

“The CryoHelmet is a new and truly innovative approach to the concussion problem.”
Marc P. Hilgers, MD, PHD, Medical Director Sports Medicine, Level One Orthopedics, Orlando, Florida
“The CryoHelmet is a slam dunk! I love the way it feels and will use it for the fighters who train at my gym”.
Lou Savarese, former heavyweight boxing contender and owner of Savarese Fight Fit gym in downtown Houston, Texas
In August 2010, my husband Lawrence Sheridan fell and fractured the back of his skull. Since that day he has experienced concussion symptoms, including head pain (which he describes as having a helmet on that is way too tight), ringing in the ear, his eyesight has changed, and some cognitive challenges. In our 4 years since the fall, we have searched out any and all pain relief including nerve blocks which have been of no relief.
We received the CryoHelmet, and this has finally afforded my husband of some pain relief. The sensation he experiences after using the CryoHelmet is as he describes as being equivalent to getting freezing when you are at the dentist.
We are now learning when better to use the CryoHelmet. When my husband is going to tackle major physical projects (ie. cutting the lawn), he will use the CryoHelmet first – then he can cut the lawn and the pain is not as severe compared to if he had not used the CryoHelmet.
The pain is frozen, and that finally is a blessing after 4 years.
Susan Sheridan – Ontario, Canada
“Wearing the helmet between shifts on the field makes me feel refreshed and ready to go! And after being on the field or court for a long stretch, I am so hot and tired… I throw the helmet on and after a few minutes I am pumped to get back out there. Also, after a game or practice I wear the Cryo Helmet the entire ride home. It really helps get my energy back.”
This looks like a good product, one I wish my daughter had access to when she was playing high school soccer. I always cringed when the coach praised the girls for heading the ball. Awesome.

WOW! Great idea! This is so common sense, I am surprised we haven’t seen this before. I’m glad you invented an easy-to-wear helmet, which will help with adopting this therapy. Hopefully using a Cryo Helmet will become standard of care for recovery from sporting injuries, accidents, and cranial surgeries
Awesome! Don’t forget the thousands of migraine suffers like myself who would also appreciate this product. If this kept me out of the ER, it would be worth every penny. I will be eagerly following the Cryohelmet as things develop.
